Top 6 Actions to Reduce Exam Stress

If you or a family member gets locked into exam stress there are a few things you can do.

Exam Stress

Stress among students is on the rise for a myriad of reasons. With exam season those stress levels rise even more.

A bit of stress can be motivating to knuckle down and get prepared. However when stress results in:

  • loss of appetite
  • poor sleep
  • anxiety
  • loss of focus
  • inability to retain what you’ve just read

You are in the downward spiral of diminishing returns.

More study creates more stress and very little retention.

6 SIMPLE actions to reduce exam stress

1. Drink lots of water. Keep those brain cells and all the other cells in your body hydrated! It's simple but it works. Hydrated cells are able to work. Dehydrated cells are going into protection mode.

2. Limit study sessions to 40 minutes and then take a break. Our brains aren’t going to retain much after 40 minutes. It's time to recharge!

3. Get outside and move your body. Exercising increases epinephrine and norepinephrine. These are the personal drive and focus neurotransmitters. Getting outside gets you away from your study space and allows you to clear your mind.

4. Diffuse Peppermint essential oil while studying. Peppermint oil has been proven in numerous studies to improve cognitive function, improve memory and problem-solving abilities and increase retention of learned material. The results have been published in several journals including the International Journal of Neuroscience.

5. Get sleep. An over tired mind doesn’t take in more information. In fact, it tends to narrow its ability to function to immediate needs. An over-tired mind isn’t going to link ideas, recognize patterns or

retain information. A good night’s sleep allows your subconscious mind do some of the work!

Essential Oils for Sleep

If you find you are too stressed to sleep try utilizing some of the best essential oils for sleep.

  • Lavender essential oil is calming and reduces anxiety. Diffuse or apply topically.
  • Vetiver essential oil helps to decrease mind chatter.
  • Digestive issues are supported with digestive essential oil blend mixed with lavender essential oil.
  • Lavender essential oil with a citrus blend of essential oils calms and uplifts a depressed nature allowing sleep.

6.To increase recall at the time of the exam either apply a drop or two of peppermint essential oil to the back of the neck just before the exam or have a cotton ball with peppermint essential oil close by to sniff as needed.

Good luck with your exams and after you’ve finished this round be sure to spend a few minutes discovering the best study habits so you’re not overwhelmed when the next round of exams comes up.
